Louis Riel Day

Tomorrow is day off to spend with friends and family and to remember who brought Manitoba into Confederation.  Louis Riel was a complicated man, but he was able to negotiate for the protection of both French and English speaking people.  He also believed in having a bilingual providence.

These rights were taken away. and took many years to get back.   It is nice to recognize our heritage and at the same time, have a long weekend in this beautiful province.  There is so much to see and do!

Canning and Prepping today

I have been canning today and also getting ready for the new school year as I am a teacher.  I have new courses this year and am hoping that my new classes go smoothly. Fingers crossed.  I have posted under my gardening and canning page the delicious recipe that I make for my family with beets!  Yum. Take a look and leave me your feedback on what you think.

That's all for now.

A little snapshot of the past

One of the things that I love about my town is the history of the place!  There is so much history and of the people that lived here before.  I love the little barns and the peace and tranquility that exists here.  Apparently, St. Pierre-Jolys was settled by Quebecois and Metis people in the 1870's.  They brought their traditions and their language to this area.  What remains are the little farms that existed and the barn structures that can still be found if one looks closely enough.  Horses were the lifeblood for getting around this place and most people that came and settled here wanted to get back to their farm roots.  The Quebecois that settled here had first settled in the United States and worked in factories.  They were recruited back to Canada by the rich fertile land that was available here in what was then known as the Rat River Settlement!
